Roast Rice Hot Bev on the Rise: Cresing’s Food Products

by: Nelly Nita Dillera

The idea of producing an alternative drink out of rice just like what Nieda Ramos’ grandmother was doing when she was a child started it all.

She wanted something that gives good health to the body.   Since rice coffee is natural, contains no preservative or caffeine, Nieda’s best choice for a product was rice coffee.  Nieda remembers during her childhood when her grandmother used to serve them roast rice for their coffee.

Nieda would recall each time their mother does not feel well, she drinks rice coffee and feels better afterwards.  Even up to now, though bed-ridden, she makes it a practice to drink a cup or two everyday.

The product is new and not common. Since Maitum is the biggest rice-producing municipality in Sarangani, Nieda thought that raw material is not hard to find.  Also, the product is non-perishable. Later, they decided to use organic brown rice to make the product more healthful. And from here, Cresing’s started to produce corn coffee for variation. Cresing’s Food Products is named after her 82 year old mother, Cresilda.

Young Entrepreneur

In her teens Nieda had already shown “entrepreneurship” when she and her two siblings  sold rice cakes, kutsinta, grilled peanuts, boiled bananas, halo-halo,  and anything that can be sold to  the neighborhood, school, public market, cinema, and even cockfight gallery.

During weekends whenever there are “bailes” or benefit dance in the barangay, she gets candies, cigarettes, and colas from her “suki” on consignment and sell these.

As she grew older, she always took any opportunity to buy and sell or bake cakes and pastries for sale to her friends and acquaintances.

A Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Home Economics graduate, Nieda is presently employed with the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist in Sarangani Province. Having been exposed to farmers, she has seen the dismal performance of the rice industry in terms of return of investment.  She is a witness to many farmers getting discouraged in rice farming and switching to planting bananas and other cash crops.

It was this rice farmers’ situation that she thought of finding other uses of rice aside from being a staple food - something that would add to the value of rice.  It has also been her dream to produce rice-based products.  She wants to emphasize that food production means from seeds to planting, to processing, then to marketing.  Which is why, there should be a continuous working relationship from agencies to marketing arms.

Other Variations

Cresing’s new variation of rice coffee 3-in-1 and corn coffee 3-in-1, plain and with malunggay is already in the market and customers’ response is very encouraging.

Cresing’s Food Products also produces polvoron, cookies, salted eggs, bagoong, and
other rice-based delicacies.

Cresing’s is into continuous research and development of their products and service to give customers more satisfaction. Nieda also attends seminars, trade fairs, and conventions in order to hone her entrepreneurial skills.

Nieda’s being an entrepreneur has some advantage in her present job with the Provincial Government.  As an employee who assists Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the province, she gets to understand better the plight of SMEs and related with them.

It is not easy though. There are joys and challenges.

Nieda admits that it takes a lot of hardship and perseverance to sustain and make the business grow but she does not give up because she knew that these are necessary to the success of the business.

Cresing’s Foods carries on due  to the patronage of friends, consumers, assisting agencies and stores.

The business employs four seasonal workers who are assigned in processing and packing.

From an initial monthly production of 48 kilos a month, Cresing’s now produces 400 kilos a month for  rice and 100 kilos for corn a month.

Apart from the financial gain that she hopes to get from the business, she wants to help other people by giving them extra income. Nieda believes that business is not only about making money but helping the lives of other people.

With the objective of helping create jobs, Cresing’s motivation and inspiration lies with the passion of doing something worthwhile during spare time.

The business can also be something to fall back on upon retirement. In relation to her work as agri-business coordinator, Nieda assists Sarangani producers believing that hands-on experience is the best teacher.
