Manufacturers weave, craft dreams to export By: Sharon Robas-Macawile Philippine Daily Inquirer
For the past 18 years, the national trade fair has been showcasing the best products from each region of the country.
Organized by the Center for International Trade Exposition and Missions (Citem), together with the Department of Trade and Industry, Bureau of Domestic Trade and Regional Operations and Development Group, the annual event brings together manufacturers of the finest Philippine products made from indigenous materials and serves as a link between domestic suppliers and retailers and exporters.
This year’s trade show, with the theme “A tour of Filipino creativity” held from March 12-15 at SMX Convention Center, gathered more than 200 exhibitors, 44 of which were on the raw/semi-processed materials category and the rest on the finished product category and the rest on the finished product category. |

Portfolio investments bounce back in January Portfolio investments posted a significant recovery in January,bouncing back from the $237.9-M outflow in January last year to a net inflow of $221.6M this year.
Data from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) indicated thatportfolio investments came in strong in the first month of the year, spurredmainly by the optimism that accompanied the inauguration of newly elected United States President Barack Obama.
The BSP report showed that gross investment inflows or registered foreign portfolio investments totaled $502.1M in January, 56% lower than the previous year’s $1.2B. Bulk of gross inflows went to investments in shares listed at the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) amounting to $321.1M. |

Outsourcing firms in a hiring mood Business process outsourcing (BPO) sector officials remain upbeat even as some firms have had to delay expansion plans and order workers to go on extended leave.
At the Clark Freeport, roughly 30 of the 900 workers of eTelecare Global Solutions, Inc. have been registered as under “temporary layoffs”, Clark Development Council (CDC) President Benigno N. Ricafort said.
“But they will be recalled once the orders come in,” he explained. eTelecare Senior Vice-President Benedict C. Hernandez confirmed this, saying: “There’s a few on extended leave but they’re much less than 10% of our employees who total 10,000.”
